| The Community Development Handbook |
Communities are groups of people engaged in mutually beneficial undertakings. | The processes of community development and capacity building help people and groups to prepare for and respond to opportunities and challenges in their communities. Community development should belong to the community and be from the community. Whether it is an involved process or a straight-forward undertaking, the result should be a better community to live in. This handbook was designed to better understand the terms, the conditions, the processes, the attitudes, knowledge and skills needed, and the common problems and solutions occurring in improving community. Each community is unique and each initiative will be distinct. However, an effective community development project does need a common vision, purpose and plan; an understanding of and ability to initiate the community development process; resources, tools and techniques; and most of all able and willing people to lead and complete it. Community cultures are constantly changing. Community –based accountability and responsibility are more in demand to foster consistent growth. This is a shift in attitude and shows that input from ordinary people can be very helpful in knowing what is best for their lives. The balanced content developed in this handbook can be an asset to community projects anywhere. Back to Library... |
